Fishing spots near Cooper Landing
Cooper Landing is the gateway to the scenic Upper Kenai River. Operating under drift-boat-only rules, this reach is renowned for world-class rainbow trout fly fishing and the famous Russian River sockeye returns.

Russian River Ferry Confluence

The ultimate sockeye bank-fishing destination. Anglers use the passenger ferry to cross the main Kenai River and fish the clear gravel bars below the Russian River mouth.
Parking fee: State park ferry and lot ticket. Crowd note: High during June/July runs.
Kenai Lake Bridge Launch (Upper Drift)
📍 60.4912° N, 149.7824° W · 0.5 miles from downtown Cooper Landing
The starting point for the upper reach drift route. Non-motorized drift boats, rafts, and kayaks launch here to float down towards Cooper Creek and Jim's Landing.
Parking fee: USFS permit lot. Accessibility: Unimproved gravel boat slide.
Upper Kenai Reach Fishing Rules
- Drift Boat Only: Motorized watercraft are prohibited from fishing in the Upper Reach (Kenai Lake outlet to Skilak Lake inlet).
- Russian River Sockeye: Subject to specific Sanctuary Zone closures in early season (June) to protect schooling reds.
- Fly Fishing: Single hook, unbaited artificial lures or flies are mandatory for trout and char. Bait is strictly prohibited.
