Fishing spots near Kenai, Alaska
Kenai City is located at the mouth of the Kenai River. This reach is heavily influenced by Cook Inlet tides, making it the primary destination for personal-use dipnetting and early-run sockeye beach netting.
Primary Access Points
North Beach (Kenai Dunes)
📍 60.5489° N, 151.2612° W · 2.1 miles from downtown Kenai
Provides access to the north mouth shore. Extremely popular for sockeye dipnetting in July. Vehicles are allowed on specific sections of the beach depending on tide state.
Parking fee: City permit or day fee. Tidal influence: High - park above high water line.
South Beach Access (Mouth)
📍 60.5285° N, 151.2590° W · 4.8 miles from Kenai City center
Lower mouth access reached via Cannery Road. Offers beach walking and net throwing opportunities on incoming tides. Less congested than North Beach but requires a drive.
Parking fee: Seasonal access stickers. Accessibility: Heavy sand - 4x4 recommended.
Kenai Mouth Fishing Rules
- Personal Use Dipnetting: Open exclusively to Alaska residents from July 10 through July 31. Tides drastically affect success.
- Tide Timing: The sockeye push is strongest during the 2 hours before and after the high tide window.
- Closure Zones: Main river channels are designated boat lanes and closed to wading. Review marking signs carefully.
