King Salmon (Chinook)
The Kenai River King Salmon is a legendary species, once producing the world record (~97 lbs). Today, these fish are a major conservation focus due to declining returns across the Pacific Northwest.
Emergency Orders
Because of their vulnerable status, King salmon fishing is heavily regulated by **Emergency Orders (EOs)**. These can change daily based on sonar counts. Currently, retention is strictly prohibited in most sections of the river to protect spawning escapement.
Identification & Ethics
Targeting Kings is often restricted even if accidental. If you hook a King salmon while fishing for Sockeye or Silvers, you must:
- Keep the fish in the water at all times.
- Release it immediately with minimal handling.
- Avoid using barbed hooks in restricted zones.
